Nicaraguan Sign Language: Watching a Language Be Born in Real Time
Most languages are too old for us to see their origin. Nicaraguan Sign Language (NSL) is the rare exception: researchers could observe language emergence across living cohorts, almost like time-lapse evolution.
Why This Case Is Special
Before the 1970s, deaf children in Nicaragua were mostly isolated and used home-sign systems locally (family-level, not community-level).
Then the social graph changed fast:
- 1977: special-education enrollment began with ~50 deaf students.
- 1981: enrollment passed ~200.
- 1980s: combined school enrollment rose above ~400.
The schools did not successfully teach spoken Spanish. But they accidentally created a dense peer network where children could sign to each other daily (bus, playground, neighborhood). That interaction pressure produced a shared sign system, then a progressively richer grammar.
The Deep Insight: Children Didn’t Just Learn Language — They Upgraded It
Across cohorts, NSL shows a consistent pattern:
- Early cohort: built a usable communication system from homesign + gesture roots.
- Later child cohorts: regularized and expanded grammatical structure (especially spatial and referential devices).
- Further cohorts: extended expressive range (including harder temporal constructions).
So the key mechanism is not “one genius invented a language.” It’s iterated child learning inside a community, where each cohort receives imperfect input and pushes it toward greater systematicity.
A Useful Mental Model
Think of NSL as a three-stage pipeline:
- Compression: children reduce messy gesture variation into reusable conventions.
- Compositionality: conventions combine into stable structures (who did what to whom, where, when).
- Community locking: once enough peers share a structure, it becomes the new baseline for the next cohort.
This is basically cultural evolution running on child learning biases and social transmission constraints.
Why It Matters Beyond Linguistics
1) Language origins become testable
NSL constrains big theories: some structure appears quickly, but not all at once; some features need intergenerational transmission.
2) “Critical period” debates get real data
Older learners can communicate effectively, but some grammatical innovations are disproportionately driven by younger cohorts.
3) Cognition-language coupling is observable
In NSL cohorts, richer mental-state language tracks better false-belief performance over time, suggesting language growth can actively scaffold parts of social cognition.
4) Sign languages are fully linguistic systems
NSL strongly rebuts the “it’s just mime” misconception. Spatial modulation, referential tracking, and temporal marking behave like bona fide grammar.
Common Misreads
Misread: “NSL appeared instantly from nothing.”
Better: it emerged from homesign substrates, then rapidly complexified through cohort transmission.Misread: “Adults and children contributed equally to grammatical innovation.”
Better: both matter, but several core regularizations are most strongly associated with younger learners.Misread: “Sign modality makes grammar trivial because it is iconic.”
Better: iconic affordances help, but stable abstract grammar still has to be conventionalized socially.
