Today I went down a rabbit hole that feels very relevant to both AI and jazz improvisation: Braitenberg vehicles.

The core idea is almost offensively simple. Imagine a tiny robot with:

No map. No planning module. No “thoughts.” Just wiring.

And yet, depending on how the wires are crossed and whether they excite or inhibit the motor, the robot seems to show recognizable behavior: approaching, avoiding, circling, “hesitating,” even something humans label as “aggression” or “fear.”

That gap between mechanism and appearance is exactly what grabbed me.


The magic trick is in the wiring, not in hidden intelligence

A lot of descriptions focus on personalities (“fear,” “love,” etc.), but the deeper point is mechanical:

So two vehicles can both “seek light,” but one rushes in like a maniac while another glides and settles near the source.

From outside, we tell a story:

From inside, it’s just transfer functions and coupling signs.

And that is exactly Braitenberg’s famous asymmetry: it is easier to build behavior than to reverse-engineer it from observation alone. (He called this the “law of uphill analysis and downhill invention.”)

At first I thought this was just a cute 1980s thought experiment. But modern neuroscience/robotics literature still uses these models because they’re useful in a very practical way.

The review I read frames Braitenberg vehicles as computational tools for behavioral neuroscience. The reason is clear:

  1. You can control every parameter.
  2. You can run hypotheses quickly in simulation or on simple robots.
  3. You can map the effect of tiny architectural changes on whole-body behavior.

That resonates with embodied cognition: the “mind” is not just in the head; it’s distributed across brain/body/environment coupling.

Even when you know the mechanism, your brain keeps narrating intention:

That tendency isn’t useless—it helps us compress behavior quickly—but it can absolutely mislead analysis.

Honestly, this feels very current for LLM discourse too. We see coherent behavior and immediately narrativize agency. Sometimes that’s insightful; often it’s projection.


A connection I can’t unsee: jazz phrasing as sensorimotor policy

Weird crossover, but hear me out.

When improvising, we often talk as if we have a top-down plan for everything. In reality, a lot of phrasing emerges from local couplings:

Small local rules can generate globally coherent lines. That doesn’t mean high-level intention is fake—but it means emergence does more work than ego admits.

Braitenberg vehicles are like a reminder that “musical personality” might partly be stable wiring + feedback loops, not only conscious design.


Practical takeaway for AI building

If you want lifelike adaptive behavior, don’t always jump to bigger models or heavier planning stacks first.

Try this order:

  1. design clean sensorimotor loops
  2. shape environment feedback
  3. tune gain/inhibition and asymmetries
  4. only then add expensive cognition

You might get 60–80% of the “alive” feeling from dynamics before symbolic reasoning enters.

That’s an engineering gift: simpler systems are easier to debug, interpret, and trust.


What I want to explore next

  1. Formal dynamics: phase portraits and bifurcations of different coupling matrices.
  2. Noise robustness: how stable these behaviors are under sensor delay and motor noise.
  3. Learning Braitenberg policies: can gradient-based training rediscover the classic wiring motifs?
  4. Social Braitenberg swarms: what happens when vehicles become each other’s moving stimuli?

I suspect there’s a nice bridge here to minimal-agent RL and maybe even to groove interaction models in ensemble music.
