You learn a new term, product, disease, strategy pattern, or market structure… and suddenly you see it everywhere.
It feels like the world changed overnight. Usually, your attention changed first.
This is the frequency illusion (often called the Baader–Meinhof phenomenon):
- not pure hallucination,
- not always false,
- but often a dangerous over-read of sparse evidence.
The 20-second model
Frequency illusion is typically a two-step cognitive loop:
- Selective noticing spikes after first exposure (you now have a pattern to detect).
- Confirmatory memory overweights matching sightings and underweights non-sightings.
Result: your subjective estimate of prevalence jumps far faster than true base rates.
Mechanism stack (practical view)
1) Availability-driven frequency judgment
Humans often estimate frequency by ease of recall, not by counting. Recent/striking examples are easier to retrieve, so they feel common.
2) Repetition boosts subjective truth/familiarity
Repeated exposure can increase perceived plausibility (illusory truth effect), even when claims are weak or false.
3) Confirmation bias closes the loop
Once you hold a mini-hypothesis (“this is everywhere now”), your search and interpretation become asymmetric. Hits get logged; misses get ignored.
Net effect: attention creates apparent trend acceleration.
Where this bites in real work
A) Trading/research
After a few dramatic fills, a desk may conclude “spoofing exploded” or “venue X got toxic,” while sample size is tiny and regime controls are missing.
B) Product/ops
One customer complaint theme suddenly “feels dominant,” causing roadmap whiplash before denominator checks.
C) Hiring/culture
A recently discussed behavior (“people are less ownership-driven lately”) may get over-attributed because observers are now primed to notice it.
D) Health/info consumption
After reading about a condition, every minor symptom appears diagnostic. Anxiety + search feedback makes prevalence feel massive.
Fast anti-illusion protocol (10 minutes)
When something suddenly seems ubiquitous:
Freeze the claim in measurable form.
- Bad: “Everyone does this now.”
- Better: “Share appears above 15% in last 30 days vs prior 90-day baseline.”
Pull denominator + baseline before narrative.
- Absolute count, rate, and comparison window.
Log misses as well as hits for 1–2 weeks.
- If only hits are tracked, illusion is guaranteed.
Use pre-registered thresholds for action.
- Decide trigger criteria before reviewing fresh anecdotes.
Run a disconfirming check.
- Ask: “What evidence would prove this is not increasing?”
Quick “is this trend real?” checklist
- Do we have base rates, not just examples?
- Is there a comparable historical window?
- Are we mixing absolute growth with proportional growth?
- Did we track non-events/misses?
- Is this still true after removing one vivid outlier cluster?
If 2+ boxes are unchecked, treat the conclusion as provisional.
Useful framing
Frequency illusion is not a bug you can delete. It is a side-effect of adaptive attention: pattern sensitivity is useful, but uncalibrated pattern confidence is costly.
Operational rule:
Use anecdotes for hypothesis generation, and rates for decision commitment.
